Treat Yourself at the Library this October!

Even if you are not a fan of Halloween or other spooky things (read: horror movies, jump scares, or Stephen King’s book IT) October at Wickson brings a plethora of Halloween-related activities events. On the plus side, since I am admittedly not a fan of scary or spooky things, I can happily confirm that the library’s list will not frighten you. It will only bring joy!

  • For all ages: Beginning Monday, September 29th, you can begin dropping off your homemade haunted houses at the Wickson for the Haunted House Contest hosted by Jen Harden and Barb Barger. These should be, according to Jen, “spookiness-appropriate,” and can brought to the library until October 11th. When you bring your house in, fill out an entry form at the circulation desk to have it displayed.

Come back October 13 – 24 to vote, and the winner will be announced on October 31st!

  • For Adults: Have you ever wanted to be a part of a real murder mystery? Now you have the chance to do just that on October 25th at 6:00 pm during the Masquerade Murder Mystery party hosted by Jen Harden. Imagine it – Venice, 1755, a masquerade ball, all is well until a glass smashes and a mysterious figure is found dead! But WHO DID IT?!

Stop by Wickson before October 25th to sign up, choose a character, and get ready to enjoy an evening of food and fun while you try to solve the mystery.

  • For Teens and Tweens: Ghoulish Glow Night happens October 18th from 6 – 7:30 pm at the library, hosted by Barb Barger and the Teen Advisory Board. If you are in 4th – 8th grade, grab your costume and join the fun at Wickson. There will be black light painting, Halloween-themed games and activities, and a costume contest.

It should be a spooktacular time for all, so RSVP at 989-652-8323 or register at the circulation desk.

  • For Kids: Beth Emmons, Early Literacy Specialist, will be hosting a fall-themed Destination Story Time on Thursday, October 9th at 10:00 am. You and your young reader can RSVP via phone or in person at Wickson. Then, on the 9th, join Mrs. Emmons at the Log House in Cross Park for stories, songs, butter making, and old-fashioned fun inside this special piece of Frankenmuth history.

The Log House is at 7760 S. Gera Rd., Frankenmuth.

There are definitely more events coming in the next month, but I thought it might be nice to add a book recommendation for those of you wondering what to read this October. If you enjoy mysteries and thrillers, or are perhaps a fan of Agatha Christie, I encourage you to check out The Guest List by Lucy Foley. I read this a few years ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story takes place at a wedding on an island off the coast of Ireland. Everything should be perfect considering the beautiful, successful couple and the extensive planning. But then someone turns up dead. Foley expertly navigates eight points of view and the omniscient narrator as she takes readers along until the secrets are revealed in the very last pages. The Guest List would be the perfect precursor to participating in the Masquerade Murder Mystery; it may even give you a slight advantage!
