Girl Scouts Partner with Library to Launch Community Garden Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Frankenmuth, MI - Local Girl Scouts Julia Waskiewicz and Avery Fielbrandt from Girl Scout Troop 50201 are partnering with the Frankenmuth Wickson District Library to bring a new community garden to life as part of their Silver Award project.

The initial phase of the garden will feature two 4-by-8-foot raised beds and a small greenhouse. Designed as a hybrid community garden, the project will provide free, shared produce for residents while also serving as a hub for educational programming. The girls will begin construction in May. During the first growing season, the girls will plant a variety of common seeds sourced from the Wickson Seed Library.

All produce grown in the garden will be available to the community at no cost, with regular donations made to the local food pantry to help reduce waste and support food access. In addition to food production, the library plans to incorporate the garden into hands-on programs focused on gardening, sustainability, and food security.

“This is such an exciting opportunity to expand the library’s role in our community,” said Library Director Michelle Duclos. “We are thrilled to partner with Julia and Avery on a project that not only provides fresh food but also creates meaningful learning experiences for all ages.”

The garden will be maintained collaboratively by the Girl Scouts, library staff, and interested community members. Those wishing to support or learn more about the project are encouraged to visit wicksonlibrary.org.
