We're going FINE FREE!!!

We’re Going Fine Free!

We are excited to share an important update from the Frankenmuth Wickson District Library. In our ongoing efforts to make the library more welcoming and accessible to everyone, we are pleased to announce that, effective July 1, 2025, our library will become a fine-free institution.

What Does “Fine Free” Mean?

Starting July 1, we will no longer charge overdue fines on items borrowed from the Frankenmuth Wickson District Library. This means that if you return items late, you won’t be penalized with daily fines. Instead, we’ll continue to send friendly reminders to help you return items on time so others can enjoy them too.

Why Are We Making This Change?

The library's mission has always been to provide free and equal access to information, education, and cultural enrichment. While overdue fines were once intended to encourage timely returns, they’ve often had the unintended effect of discouraging library use—especially for those who need us most.

By going fine-free, we aim to:

  • Promote Literacy and Learning: Without the fear of fines, more families—especially children—may feel comfortable checking out materials and engaging with the library.

  • Enhance Accessibility: Everyone deserves access to library resources, regardless of their financial circumstances.

  • Build a Stronger Community: We strive to create a welcoming, inclusive space where all patrons feel valued and supported.

How Will It Work?

  • Overdue fines will no longer be charged for items checked out from our library, starting July 1.

  • All existing overdue fines will be forgiven. If you currently have overdue fines on your account, they will be removed automatically.

  • Lost or damaged items will still be billed. If an item is significantly overdue, it will be considered "lost" and a replacement fee may be charged. However, if the item is returned in good condition, that fee will be waived.

  • Accounts may still be temporarily blocked if high-value or in-demand items (such as technology, games, or kits) are not returned after multiple reminders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this encourage people to return items late? Not likely. Many libraries that have gone fine-free report little to no increase in late returns. In fact, many have seen better return rates and a noticeable increase in patrons returning to the library after avoiding it due to past fines.

What if I still want to return things on time? We love that! Returning items on time helps everyone enjoy the collection. We’ll continue to send reminders via email, text, or phone to help you stay on track.

Does this apply to all materials? Yes, this change applies to most materials checked out from our library.

How can I help support this change? The best way to support this transition is by continuing to borrow and return items on time and encouraging others to do the same.

We’re excited about this step forward and hope it encourages even more members of our community to make the most of their library. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our staff—we’re happy to help.
