Fall in Love with Your Library this February

February is National Library Lover’s Month, the 28 days of the year dedicated especially to the people who love books and the buildings that house them. From box stores like Barnes and Noble, to indie bookstores occupying small spaces in big cities, to our very own local library—this month is for the bibliophiles.

There are countless reasons to love your local library, and if you’re a book lover, you only need one: books. However, February is a great time to share ten additional ways to fall in love with your local library.

1.      Make it your meet up place. Grab a coffee, get your friend, and stop by for a little chat. The library is a great place to catch up with your friends in a quiet environment.

2.      Prepare for a warm welcome. One of my favorite things about our small town library is being welcomed by name. Our librarians are always ready to greet the community with a warm smile and friendly face.

3.      Browse the shelves. Most bibliophiles could browse an indie bookstore for hours, but why not do it at the library where everything is free? Walk down the aisles and see what sparks your interest; look at all the beautiful covers. You might surprise yourself and find yourself drawn to an unexpected book that catches your eye. After all, opposites attract.

4.      Bring your kids or grandkids. The library is one of the best spaces to host a play date and let your kids explore an environment that encourages creativity and creates lifelong readers.

5.      Explore the Library of Things. I’ve been checking out the Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Therapy Lamp from the Library of Things (LOT), and I’ve noticed a positive change in my energy levels and mood.  The collection of items in the LOT keeps growing, but a few recent additions include radon detectors, board games, and a wood burning kit, to name a few.

6.      Get creative with crafts. Crafting can be relaxing and a great opportunity to meet new people. The Wickson Library hosts a monthly event called “Fourth Friday Arts & Crafts.” The group meets from 11am to noon and engages in a new craft each month. Join us on Friday, February 28 to make a DIY essential oil vent clip air freshener. All supplies are included.

7.      Join a book club. Book clubs offer a unique opportunity to read outside of your preferred genre, geek out on good books with a community of book lovers and meet new people! Wickson hosts a handful of monthly book clubs including the library’s no obligation book club, Books for Lunch, Brews & Books, Wickson Reads Book Club, and a fantasy and sci-fi focused Infinite Realms Book Club.

8.      Learn something new. The library encompasses dozens of options for continued learning. Try your hand at a new game at Bridge Club or Mah Jongg, or join us for an upcoming informational session or author event.

9.      Gain access to a wealth of information and educational resources. Libby, Kanopy, the Valley Library Consortium (VLC)—the sky is the limit with Wickson Library, and it’s all readily available to you with your library card.

10.  Last, but certainly not least: read! There are plenty of cozy chairs and quiet reading nooks to cuddle up and enjoy a good book.

Let’s be honest, there are an infinite number of ways to fall in love with your local library this February and all year long, but these ten swoon-worthy ideas have the potential to leave you smitten. There’s something at the Wickson Library for everyone to enjoy. Fair warning: your beloved local library will be here to catch you when you fall head over heels and land in a pile of books. As always, happy reading, and happy National Library Lover’s month!
