Dyslexia Awareness Month: Utilizing Library Resources to Raise Confident Readers

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month!

At the Wickson District Library, we have curated a wonderful collection of books and literacy devices specifically designed for ALL readers at EVERY level.

Here's just a sampling of the different resources we have available for our community:

  • Decodables: Decodable books are specifically designed for beginning readers to practice their phonics skills. Decodables are carefully constructed to only include words that follow the phonics rules a student has already been taught! By providing texts that students can successfully read on their own, decodable books build confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

  • Juvenile Large Print Books: Did you know that in addition to our Adult Large Print books, we also have Large Print options in our Juvenile section?!

Young readers can benefit from larger font sizes & fewer words per page. This combination can help kids decode and track text more carefully, string words together more quickly, and therefore process information more easily!

Feel free to ask any one of the librarians for help in finding our large print options!

  •  VOX Books: Did you know studies show that read-alongs can improve reading comprehension?

Enter our collection of VOX books. Innovative hard cover books that blend the magic of print books with audio narration. Children can simply open a book and push a button to listen and follow along. VOX books can be powerful tools for both educators and parents. Stop in & visit us at the circulation desk and we can point you in the direction of our selection!

It is truly one of the great honors of the library staff to be able to direct you to, and assist you with, tools that will equip you and your loved ones to become confident, joyful readers! If you would like to learn more about any of these resources, please stop at the circulation desk and talk with our librarians!
