“Adventure Begins at Your Library”

Longer days and warmer weather can only mean one thing: summer is just around the corner! And with this adventurous season comes the return of Wickson Library’s summer reading program—an action-packed summer full of programs, prizes, and plenty of reading.

This year’s summer reading theme is “Adventure Begins at Your Library” and we are prepared to take patrons of all ages on a series of unforgettable adventures, including sailing on the Saginaw Bay, horse riding, a trip to the Birch Run Motor Speedway, a “Language of Flowers” gardening adventure, a three-part food preservation series (canning, freezing, dehydrating), a Percy Jackson inspired event, adventures in photography with professional photographer Niki Schaller, and so much more.

In fact, this summer holds a few of our greatest celebrations to date! Wickson Library is kicking off the summer as the Grand Marshall for the Bavarian Festival Parade—you can even walk alongside our float as library patrons!—and on June 24th, we’re celebrating Wickson Library’s 50th anniversary with a special 12pm - 6pm open house. Plus, we’ve got our ongoing “50 Books for 50 Years” challenge happening. There are so many exciting things happening at our library.

The summer reading program begins on Saturday, June 1, and will introduce new reading programs for babies and toddlers with prizes upon completion, in addition to its usual reading program for kids, teens, and adults. The last day to register for the summer reading challenge is Friday, July 12, and the final day to submit your reading logs is Friday, July 26.

Some activities are limited to certain age ranges and others have limited capacity, so be sure to sign up for your favorite events and programs on June 1. Activities are expected to fill up fast. Detailed information regarding summer reading programming and events is available at the library, on our website, or on our Facebook page.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible support of our community. All summer reading prizes have been donated from local businesses or acquired by the ongoing Friends of the Library used book sale.

“We wouldn’t be able to do 90% of this without the generosity of the community,” says Library Director Michelle Duclos. It truly is a community effort! We’d like to extend a special thanks to our generous sponsors for their overwhelming support: Bavarian Inn, Zehnder’s, Serendipity Wellness Spa, Frankenmuth FunShips, Rau’s Country Store, McDonald’s, Bead Haven, Delta College, and so many more.

Beyond the adventures awaiting us throughout the summer reading program, the primary focus of this initiative is to create a daily reading habit, and to encourage readers of all ages to dive into the endless adventures awaiting them within the pages of every book. So what are you waiting for? Stop into the library or open the Libby app on your phone, check out your next summer novel or non-fiction adventure, find your favorite summer reading nook, and dive in. Because this summer (and all year long), adventure begins at your library.
