A Special Thanks to Wickson’s Library Workers

In case you did not know, April is a special month for libraries. The whole month is designated School Library Month, a time for the American Association of School Librarians to celebrate school librarians and their programs. As a lifetime lover of libraries, I can remember so many of the school libraries that have been a part of my life as a student, a teacher, and a parent. From elementary school story times to using encyclopedias for research in 5th grade (yes, that dates me, I know), school libraries hold many vivid memories for me. In college the library became my preferred location for doing all my work, from writing essays to researching and meeting with others for group projects. And I always enjoyed attending the Scholastic Book Fairs with my kids each fall.

April also holds National Library Week, which was the 6th – 12th this year. This observance is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) to celebrate the myriad contributions of libraries and librarians across the country. Tuesday of National Library Week is National Library Workers Day. This is an opportunity to recognize the many dedicated and wonderful librarians and staff members who make all libraries, especially Wickson, a thriving place for the whole community.

I asked each member of the library staff to complete this sentence, and here is what they told me: “My favorite thing about working at the library is...”

“…[that] each day brings the opportunity to connect with our wonderful community and make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. As director, I’m honored to help ensure the library remains a welcoming, vital resource for everyone—now and in the future.” - Michelle Duclos, Library Director

“…creating joyful, high-quality programs that spark imagination and open doors to brand new experiences for our children [and] making sure every child has access to amazing books…!” - Beth Emmons, Early Literacy Specialist

“…the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the wonderful people in our community, creating a welcoming space where everyone feels connected and valued.” – Jen Harden, Adult and Outreach Specialist Librarian

“…building friendships with our patrons while helping them discover their next great read. It's incredibly rewarding to assist them in finding the resources they need and to offer a diverse selection of items that bring joy to readers of all ages.” - Kathy Wiese, Assistant Library Director

“…of course, the patrons – especially our tween and teen patrons! Also, working with the TAB (Teen Advisory Board) group and my wonderful coworkers.” - Barb Barger, Youth Services Librarian.

“…getting to know new people in the community, interacting with people in all different age ranges, and getting to talk about books all day!” – Kristen Gere, Librarian II

“…the sense of community that it offers. Wickson is more than just a library.” - Karen Jenson, Librarian I

“…that the library has become a multipurpose destination [and that] people are coming to the library because that’s where the books are. Reading is still essential.” - Deb Allport, Library Assistant

“…[that] Wickson is a safe place where our community can have fun, connect, interact, and develop relationships with people while sharing their love of reading…helping others and being surrounded by books!” - Kelly Phillip, Librarian I

Even though April 8th has passed, please take a moment to stop in and thank the many hardworking people at Wickson District Library for all that they do!
